English

Vortex auxetic structures have significant potential for protective applications due to their unique geometry, ability to manage stress distribution, and capability to create a stable plateau region. In this study, the quasi-static compressive behavior of four innovative configurations, namely the hierarchical vortex core, re-entrant vortex loop, confined vortex lattice, and reinforced hybrid vortex structure, was evaluated. Numerical simulations were performed in ABAQUS based on energy geometric modeling in SolidWorks to investigate the effects of geometric complexity and reinforcement strategies on stress distribution and energy absorption performance. The results showed that the normalized specific energy absorption values for the hierarchical, re-entrant, confined, and reinforced hybrid structures were 12.5, 25.5, 45.2, and 49.8 kJ/m³, respectively. Among the investigated models, the reinforced hybrid vortex structure achieved the highest energy absorption. Moreover, compared with the confined vortex lattice, its peak crushing force decreased by 51.4%, from 212636.2 N to 103272.8 N, indicating more effective mitigation of the initial impact and a reduction in sudden load transfer to the structure. Furthermore, this configuration exhibited the most stable plastic deformation behavior, with the lowest mean crushing force of 0.34.
