In recent years, the need for more healthcare, increasing life expectancy, and high demand for surgical instruments and implants have significantly increased the importance of smart biomaterials in the medical industry. NiTi alloys belong to a group of smart materials that have shape memory properties and superelasticity. Hence, these alloys are also known as smart-shape memory alloys. NiTi shape memory alloys have a wide range of medical and dental applications due to their ability to recover their original shape during heating or unloading. In addition, a "stress-shielding effect" occurs when the stiffness mismatch between the bone and the fracture fixation implant is significant. Due to the modulus elasticity closer to the bone, NiTi alloys have emerged as the most successful material in biomedical applications, particularly in orthopedics and dentistry. Compared to other implant materials such as 316L stainless steel, NiTi alloys have better mechanical properties, excellent biocompatibility, and modelling hysteresis. These unique properties of NiTi alloys have led to their replacement in some applications in place of Ti-based alloys, 316L stainless steel, and other alloys and metals used in this field.
